Earning Non-College Minors and Undergraduate Area Certificates
Policy statement
Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the College of Arts and Sciences may pursue any officially approved undergraduate minor or area certificate offered at Indiana University Bloomington, provided that the school offering the credential approves the student’s enrollment and completion.
Admission to a minor or area certificate is subject to the policies, procedures, academic standards, and capacity limitations established by the offering school. Students must satisfy all prerequisite, coursework, grade, residency, and other program requirements associated with the credential.
Nothing in this policy obligates a school to admit a student to a minor or area certificate program. The offering school retains final authority over eligibility, admission, continuation, and verification of completion of the credential.
Because stand-alone certificates are awarded independently of degree programs, they are not governed by this policy.
- 2026-08-01: Established as a regular student policy (similar language was previously appended to the outside minor list). Removes requirement that non-College minors must meet minimum requirements for minors in the College. Also establishes that minors (and certificates) do not need special approval from the College to be declared by students.
