Minor in Linguistics

Students on Fall 2026, Spring 2027, or Summer 2027 requirements LINGMIN

Requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Introduction to Linguistics. One (1) course:
    • LING-L 103 Introduction to the Study of Language
    • LING-L 203
  2. Linguistics Electives. Three (3) courses:
    • Any LING-[x] 100–499 except LING-L 103; LING-L 203
  3. Free Elective(s). At least one (1) course:
    • Additional course from the Linguistics Electives list
    • SLHS-S 333 Childhood Language
    • ANTH-L 200 Language and Culture
    • EALC-J 421 Introduction to Japanese Linguistics
    • FRIT-F 402 Introduction to French Linguistics
    • HISP-S 326 Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics
    • SLST-S 301 Introduction to Second Language Acquisition
  4. Minor Hours and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Minor Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. Minor Upper Division Courses. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300-499 level.
    3. Minimum Grade. A grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.

Minor Area Courses
  • Unless otherwise noted below, the following courses are considered in the academic program and will count toward academic program requirements as appropriate:

    • Any course at the 100–499 level with the LING subject area prefix—as well as any other subject areas that are deemed functionally equivalent
    • Any course contained on the course lists for the academic program requirements at the time the course is taken—as well as any other courses that are deemed functionally equivalent—except for those listed only under Addenda Requirements
    • Any course directed to a non-Addenda requirement through an approved exception

This program of study cannot be combined with the following:

  • Interdepartmental Major in Anthropology and Linguistics (Bachelor of Arts) [ANTHBA_M01]
  • Interdepartmental Major in Linguistics and Anthropology (Bachelor of Arts) [LINGANTBA]
  • Major in Computational Linguistics (Bachelor of Science) [COMPLINGBS]
  • Major in Computational Linguistics/Master of Science in Computational Linguistics (Bachelor of Science) [CMLNBSMSBS]
  • Major in Linguistics (Bachelor of Arts) [LINGBA]

Exceptions to and substitutions for minor requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
