Minor in Cognitive Science

Students on Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Spring 2020 requirements COGSMIN
The Minor in Cognitive Science provides an introduction to a select set of main themes in cognitive science, including math, logic, philosophy, computation, linguistics, and experimental approaches. As cognitive science is broadly interdisciplinary, the cognitive science minor will complement a wide variety of majors.

Requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Core. Two (2) courses:
    • COGS-Q 240 Philosophical Foundations of the Cognitive and Information Sciences
    • COGS-Q 350 Mathematics and Logic for the Cognitive and Information Sciences
    • COGS-Q 370 Experiments and Models in Cognition
  2. Math, Logic, or Computation. One (1) additional option from the Math, Logic, or Computation list.
    • Both of the following:
      • COGS-Q 260 Programming for the Cognitive and Information Sciences (may be exempted for students with strong computational backgrounds)
      • COGS-Q 320 Computation in the Cognitive and Information Sciences
    • COGS-Q 350 Mathematics and Logic for the Cognitive and Information Sciences

  4. Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    5. Exceptions to minor requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
