Minor in Computational Linguistics

Students on Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Spring 2020 requirements CMPLNGMIN
The Minor in Computational Linguistics supplements coursework in related fields by bringing together linguistic analysis and computational techniques. Students gain skill sets not found in their major that tie together otherwise disparate areas.

Requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours*, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Introductory courses.
    1. Introduction to the Study of Language**. One (1) course:
      • LING-L 103 Introduction to the Study of Language
      • LING-L 203 Introduction to Linguistic Analysis
    2. Introductory elective. One (1) course:
      • LING-L 307 Phonology
      • LING-L 310 Syntax
  2. Foundational courses.
    1. Introduction to Informatics. One (1) course:
      • INFO-H 101 INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATICS, HONORS
      • INFO-I 101 INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATICS
      • INFO-H 210 INFORMATION INFRASTRUCTURE I, HONORS
      • INFO-I 210 INFORMATION INFRASTRUCTURE I
    2. Foundational Skills in Computational Linguistics***. One (1) course:
      • LING-L 435 Foundational Skills in Computational Linguistics
    3. The Computer and Natural Language. One (1) course:
      • LING-L 445 The Computer and Natural Language
  3. Electives. Additional courses from the Electives list.
    • LING-L 245 Language and Computers

    • Another related course approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies
  4. Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    5. Exceptions to minor requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
