Minor in Dutch Studies (Minors) (DUTCHMIN)Department of Germanic Studies

The Minor in Dutch Studies focuses on Dutch language, literatures, and cultures. It allows students to achieve proficiency in Dutch while exploring advanced topics in the literatures, media, intellectual histories, and societies of Dutch-speaking regions including the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles, French Flanders, South Africa, and Indonesia. The minor can serve as a preparation for study abroad or to supplement a global career in the diverse areas of Dutch influence.

Minor requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.

  1. Intensive Dutch II. One (1) course:
  2. Dutch Reading, Composition, and Conversation I. One (1) course:
  3. Dutch Reading, Composition, and Conversation II. One (1) course:
  4. Electives. Nine (9) credit hours:
    • (approved topic: "Wartime in the Netherlands")
  5. GPA and Hours Requirements.
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    5. Exceptions to minor requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
