Minor in Gender Studies

Due to the transdisciplinary nature of the department, the Minor in Gender Studies complements a wide variety of programs and degrees. From the humanities to the sciences, policy to the arts, media to education, the Minor in Gender Studies can enhance a student's degree as it examines how gender and its intersections have an impact on various fields.

Requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Introductory. Three (3) credit hours:
    • Any GNDR-G 100–199
  2. Intermediate. Three (3) credit hours:
    • Any GNDR-G 200–299
    • Any GNDR-G 300–399
  3. Advanced. Six (6) credit hours at the 300–499 level and three (3) additional credit hours at the 400–499 level, for a total of nine (9) credit hours from the Advanced list.
    • Any GNDR-G 300–399
    • Any GNDR-G 400–499
  4. International/non-Western emphasis. One (1) of the Introductory, Intermediate, or Advanced courses must have an International/non-Western emphasis.

  5. Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    5. Exceptions to minor requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
