Hispanic Linguistics Track (Bachelor of Arts in Spanish)

Students on Summer 2021, Fall 2021, or Spring 2022 requirements HISPLNGTRK

The Hispanic linguistics track allows majors to deepen their knowledge of the Spanish language system and its regional, social, and pragmatic variation; the acquisition of Spanish as a second language; and issues on bilingualism. This track provides majors with a social sciences approach to language study, foregrounding a hands-on research experience with data collection and quantitative analysis of Spanish.

Requirements

The track requires at least 18 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Linguistics. Three (3) courses:

    • HISP-S 430 The Acquisition of Spanish

    • HISP-S 498 Honors Seminar (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
  2. Literature. One (1) course:

  4. Track Residency. At least one (1) of the 400–498 level courses used to fulfill the requirements above must be completed on the Indiana University Bloomington campus.
  5. Track GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Major GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the major—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    2. Major Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the major.
    3. Major Upper Division Credit Hours. At least 18 credit hours in the major must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    4. Major Residency. At least 18 credit hours in the major must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    5. College Breadth. At least 58 credit hours must be completed in courses from College of Arts and Sciences disciplines outside of the major area.

Track Area Courses

Courses that may apply toward the Credit Hours and GPA requirements in this academic program include all courses listed on the requirement course lists at the time the course was taken as well as any other courses that are deemed functionally equivalent.

Exclusions

The following courses cannot be applied toward track requirements:

  • Same as the major, as appropriate based on the Academic program Area Courses list above.

Restrictions

The following restrictions apply to the minimum credit hours required in the track:

This program of study cannot be combined with the following:

  • Hispanic Literature Track (Bachelor of Arts in Spanish) (HISPLITTRK)
  • Hispanic Studies Track (Bachelor of Arts in Spanish) (HISPSTDTRK)

Exceptions to and substitutions for track requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
