Departmental Honors

Students on Summer 2020, Fall 2020, or Spring 2021 requirements HIST-HON

Departmental Honors in History provides a way for talented undergraduates to explore for themselves the practice of history. Working closely with the faculty honors director and an individual faculty advisor, each honors student designs, researches, and writes a research project, tailored to his/her interests. Departmental Honors are noted on the student's transcript—a distinction noted by employers and graduate school admissions officers in search of first-rate students.

Requirements

  1. Honors Seminar. One (1) course:
    • HIST-K 392 Honors Seminar
  2. One of the following options.
    • Honors Thesis. Six (6) credit hours:
      • HIST-K 499 Senior Honors Thesis
    • Honors Paper. Three (3) credit hours:
      • HIST-K 498 Senior Honors Paper
  3. GPA. Complete a minimum of 33 credits in History with:
    1. 3.500 History Major GPA.
    2. 3.300 College GPA.
  4. GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Students must have a College GPA of 3.300 or higher to qualify for admission to a Departmental Honors program and to receive Departmental Honors. Units may set a higher College GPA.
    2. Units establish additional criteria, including admissions procedures, academic performance standards, and whether there are required courses, papers, or projects.
    3. Students who wish to earn honors in two different units must complete a distinct body of work for each honors notation.

Exceptions to and substitutions for honors requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
