Departmental Honors

Students on Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Spring 2020 requirements HUBI-HON
Outstanding students earning the B.A. or B.S. in Human Biology who are highly motivated to conduct independent research are encouraged to apply for the Human Biology Departmental Honors program. It is best suited to students who wish to expand and deepen their inquiry into an aspect of human biology beyond the core classes. The honors option is a challenging endeavor and should only be embarked upon with a strong commitment to, and ability to carry out, independent work. Interested students should start thinking about this option during their sophomore year or first semester of their junior year.

Requirements

  1. GPA. Both a College GPA and Major GPA of 3.700 or higher are required at the time of graduation.
  2. Undergraduate Research.
    1. Course Enrollment. Complete the following course two (2) times and for a total of six (6) credit hours:
      • HUBI-X 498 Undergraduate Research in Human Biology
    2. Additional Expectations. Students will:
      1. Engage in a year-long independent project involving research, or, a creative activity or service learning project that is contextualized within the scholarly literature during the senior year.
      2. Write a thesis and an additional paper, per the guidelines of the program.
      3. Present the results to the public.
  3. GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Students must have a College GPA of 3.300 or higher to qualify for admission to a Departmental Honors program and to receive Departmental Honors. Units may set a higher College GPA.
    2. Units establish additional criteria, including admissions procedures, academic performance standards, and whether there are required courses, papers, or projects.
    3. Students who wish to earn honors in two different units must complete a distinct body of work for each honors notation.
