Minor in Portuguese (PORTMIN)Department of Spanish and Portuguese

Description

The Minor in Portuguese provides students with a solid foundation in oral and written skills in Portuguese as well as a broad introduction to Lusophone studies.

Minor requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.

  1. Second-Year Portuguese I*. One (1) course from the following:
    • P: HISP-P 150 or equivalent. Attendance in the language laboratory may be required. Continuation of HISP-P 100, with increased emphasis on communicative exercises and selected readings. (3 credit hours.)
  2. Second-Year Portuguese II. One (1) course from the following:
    • P: HISP-P 150 or equivalent. Attendance in the language laboratory may be required. Continuation of HISP-P 150, with increased emphasis on communicative exercises and selected readings. (3 credit hours.)
  3. Advanced Grammar and Composition in Portuguese. One (1) course from the following:
    • P: HISP-P 200 and HISP-P 250; or equivalent. An advanced course on basic grammar skills and composition. Emphasis on syntax, vocabulary usage, and writing. (3 credit hours.)
  4. Advanced Electives. One (1) of the following options:
    • Option 1. Both of the following:
      1. Reading and Conversation in Portuguese. One (1) course from the following:
        • P: HISP-P 200 and HISP-P 250; or equivalent. Emphasis on conversational and reading skills using plays, short stories, poetry, and novels from Brazil, Portugal, and Lusophone Africa. Students will also be introduced to the basics of literary appreciation. (3 credit hours.)
      2. Elective. Additional HISP-P course at the 400–495 level.
    • Option 2.
      • Electives. Two (2) additional HISP-P courses at the 400–495 level.
  5. GPA, Minimum Grade, and Other Requirements. Each of the following:
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    5. Exceptions to minor requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Notes

  • * Native speakers of Portuguese are expected to complete the minor with coursework at the HISP-P 300–499 level.
