Minor in Southeast Asian and ASEAN Studies

Students on Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Spring 2020 requirements SEASMIN

The primary objectives of the Minor in Southeast Asian ASEAN Studies are to increase undergraduate knowledge of Southeast Asia and its languages. Students have the opportunity to study histories, economies, identities, cultural practices, religions, forms of governance, environments and languages of populations of Southeast Asia and the lands and waters they inhabit. This minor also provides students with knowledge of Southeast Asia as a subject of academic study and research.

Requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.

SEAS-S 231 Growing Up in Southeast Asia

Description
Exploration of the multiple constructions of childhood across Southeast Asia, combining sociocultural and policy relevant perspectives.Â Themes will include family dynamics and cultural transmission; the rights of children; and the life experiences of 'children in especially difficult circumstances,' including refugees, children of migrant workers, and those compelled to work.

Description
The story of America\'s longest war--the battles, the protests, the movies, and the controversies. The Vietnam War was an epic event, the climax of the Cold War and the high-water mark of American power. Students will learn about the experiences of combatants on both sides, the reasoning behind American strategy, and the history of Vietnam\'s struggle for independence. The course will also deal with the war\'s legacies, its place in popular culture, and the war\'s economic and political aftershocks.

Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
1. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
2. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
5. Exceptions to minor requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
