Certificate in Spanish and Hispanic Cultures for Global Business

Students on Summer 2020, Fall 2020, or Spring 2021 requirements SHCGBACRT

The Certificate in Spanish and Hispanic Cultures for Global Business offers students considering a business career, whether for-profit or non-profit, involving international and/or domestic Spanish-speaking communities the opportunity to acquire advanced language skills in Spanish and a high degree of cultural competency. The certificate includes a service learning component, works well with Study Abroad plans, and allows the option to include coursework on culturally related Portuguese and Catalan-speaking world regions. The certificate provides language and cross-cultural communication skills that are essential for successful and meaningful business engagement in a globalized economy.

Requirements

The certificate requires at least 28 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Advanced Grammar. One (1) course:
    • HISP-S 280 Spanish Grammar in Context
    • HISP-S 281 Advanced Spanish for Heritage Speakers
  2. Business Spanish. One (1) course:
    • HISP-S 315 Spanish in the Business World
    • Business course taught in Spanish taken through an IU-administered or co-sponsored study abroad program (with departmental approval)
  3. Introductory Courses. Two (2) courses:

  9. Certificate GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the certificate.
    4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the certificate—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    5. Exceptions to certificate requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Certificate Area Courses

Unless otherwise noted below, the following courses are considered in the academic program and will count toward academic program requirements as appropriate:

  • Any course contained on the course lists for the academic program requirements at the time the course is taken—as well as any other courses that are deemed functionally equivalent—except for those listed only under Addenda Requirements
  • Any course directed to a non-Addenda requirement through an approved exception
Exclusions

The following courses cannot be applied toward certificate requirements:

  • SPAN-S 303

Exceptions to and substitutions for certificate requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
