Departmental Honors
Students on Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Spring 2020 requirements SLHS-HON
Students who participate in the Honors Program in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences seek to deepen their understanding of the field of communication sciences and its disorders by engaging in independent scholarly and scientific research. Those who graduate with Departmental Honors participate in a culminating academic experience by writing a thesis under the guidance of a faculty advisor.

- Description
- Introduction to research methodology in speech and hearing science, both basic and applied. Focuses on basic designs, analyses, and how research informs clinical practice. Course includes discussion of ethics, evaluation of research, and scientific writing.

PSY-P 211 Methods of Experimental Psychology

- Description
- Design and execution of simple experiments, treatment of results, search of the literature, and preparation of experimental reports.

- Honors Seminar. One (1) course:

- Description
- Seminar in which students begin to think critically about conducting research in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. Focuses on the fundamentals of research design as well as the development of research-related skills, such as reading and understanding research and writing a scientific report.

- Description
- Continuation of work begun in SLHS-S 398. Focuses on the development of students' individual research projects, with a particular emphasis on research methods and data collection. Group meetings provide for review of general topics related to research, ethics, scholarly writing, and other topics of interest to individual students.

- Description
- Continuation of work begun in SLHS-S 399. Focuses on the development of students' individual research projects, with a particular emphasis on data analysis and interpretation of findings.
- Research Project. Satisfactory completion of a research project with results presented to the department.
- GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
- Students must have a College GPA of 3.300 or higher to qualify for admission to a Departmental Honors program and to receive Departmental Honors. Units may set a higher College GPA.
- Units establish additional criteria, including admissions procedures, academic performance standards, and whether there are required courses, papers, or projects.
- Students who wish to earn honors in two different units must complete a distinct body of work for each honors notation.
Notes
The Honors Program is open to academically talented and motivated students who wish to engage in independent study and research under the close supervision of a faculty advisor. All juniors with an overall GPA of 3.5 or better are eligible for participation. Qualifying students will be contacted by the department in the fall of their junior year. Successful applicants are admitted to the program in the spring of their junior year. Contact the departmental honors advisor for further information.
