Departmental Honors

Researching and writing a departmental honors thesis offers high-achieving students a way to deepen their command of an area of interest. Completing an honors thesis is a particularly good exercise if you are considering graduate school.

Many students choose projects with both an academic and a creative component, such as a research paper coupled with a dance performance.

Requirements

  1. Honors Courses. Six (6) credit hours:
    • THTR-T 399 Reading, Research, Performance for Honors
    • THTR-T 499 Reading, Research, Performance for Honors
  2. 300–499 Level Honors Courses. Complete at least nine (9) credit hours in 300–499 level honors courses in theater and drama.
  3. Credit Hours Requirement. Complete at least 33 credit hours in theater and drama.
  4. Senior Project. Complete a senior project with a creative and/or research focus.
  5. GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Students must have a College GPA of 3.300 or higher to qualify for admission to a Departmental Honors program and to receive Departmental Honors. Units may set a higher College GPA.
    2. Units establish additional criteria, including admissions procedures, academic performance standards, and whether there are required courses, papers, or projects.
    3. Students who wish to earn honors in two different units must complete a distinct body of work for each honors notation.

Exceptions to and substitutions for honors requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
