  • HISP-C 105 Intensive Catalan Language (3 cr.) R: Knowledge of another Romance language. May be used in elective area of the Spanish major. Does not count toward the major in Portuguese. Introduction to the study of Catalan language and of the particular situation of Catalonia as a culture within present-day Spain. Credit given for only one of HISP-C 105 or HISP-C 400.
  • HISP-C 450 Catalan Literature (3 cr.) P: HISP-C 105 or consent of instructor. Survey of Catalan literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Examines significant works in all genres within their historical and cultural contexts, with special attention to issues of nation-formation, hegemony, biculturalism, and marginalizations.
  • HISP-C 491 Elementary Catalan for Graduate Students (3 cr.) Introduction to the study of Catalan language with emphasis on reading. Also includes a cultural overview of Catalonia and the Catalan linguistic area.
  • HISP-C 492 Readings in Catalan for Graduate Students (3 cr.) P: HISP-C 491 or consent of department. Introduction to Catalan literary and cultural production of all periods with an emphasis on developing reading skills.
  • HISP-P 100 Elementary Portuguese I (4 cr.) Introduction to present-day Portuguese, with drills for mastery of phonology, basic structural patterns, and functional vocabulary. Attendance in language laboratory may be required.
  • HISP-P 115 Portuguese for Doing Business in Brazil (4 cr.) Provides the novice Portuguese student with the vocabulary, structures, and cultural awareness necessary to perform frequent business tasks in Brazil and with Brazilian clients/colleagues in formal and informal situations.
  • HISP-P 135 Intensive Portuguese (4 cr.) May be used in elective area of the Spanish major. For students from secondary school placed into the second semester of first-year study or those with prior knowledge of another Romance language. Content of HISP-P 100 and HISP-P 150 reviewed at an accelerated pace. Credit given for only one of HISP-P 135 or HISP-P 150.
  • HISP-P 150 Elementary Portuguese II (4 cr.) P: HISP-P 100 or HISP-P 115; or consent of the department. Attendance in language laboratory may be required. Introduction to present-day Portuguese, with drills for mastery of phonology, basic structural patterns, and functional vocabulary.
  • HISP-P 200 Second-Year Portuguese I (3 cr.) P: HISP-P 135 or HISP-P 150; or consent of department. Attendance in the language laboratory may be required. Continuation of HISP-P 100, with increased emphasis on communicative exercises and selected readings.
  • HISP-P 250 Second-Year Portuguese II (3 cr.) P: HISP-P 200 or consent of department. Attendance in the language laboratory may be required. Continuation of HISP-P 150, with increased emphasis on communicative exercises and selected readings.
