Department of Linguistics
Linguistics is the scientific study of language in all its forms and uses. The Department of Linguistics (LING) offers an array of opportunities, including a major in linguistics, one interdepartmental major shared with the Department of Anthropology, a Bachelor of Science degree and a combined, accelerated Bachelor of Science/Master of Science degree in Computational Linguistics, minors in linguistics and in computational linguistics, as well as the opportunity for interested students to take coursework that satisfies the Breadth of Inquiry requirements. The curriculum is designed to broaden students' foreign language experience with the study of language structure and to introduce students to a variety of aspects of linguistic investigation, including language use, meaning, and stylistics; language change and variation; and training in linguistic analysis of phonetic, phonological, morphological, and syntactic structure.
