Foreign Language Placement

Policy statement

Students who matriculate to Indiana University with prior knowledge of a foreign language and seek to continue study in the language must take the placement test in that language before registering for their first semester's classes. The purpose of the test is to identify the appropriate foreign language course to take at IU Bloomington. For the following languages this is done online:

• Chinese
• French
• German
• Hebrew
• Italian
• Japanese
• Latin
• Spanish

For all other languages please visit the website of the relevant department for information on their placement tests. The list of foreign languages in this Bulletin indicates the departments or programs that offer a foreign language.
