Withdrawals from Courses

Policy statement

The College of Arts and Sciences follows the deadlines concerning withdrawals from courses as prescribed in the Official Calendar published in the IUB Enrollment Bulletin (Office of the Registrar).

Withdrawal from All Subjects

Students who seek to withdraw from all their courses for an academic term, must complete a Withdrawal from All Subjects through the appropriate office:

Withdrawal from selected courses

Petitions for late withdrawal after the periods specified above will not be authorized by the Dean except for urgent reasons beyond the student's control related to extended illness or equivalent distress. The desire to avoid a low grade is not an acceptable reason for withdrawal from a course.

To begin the petition process, the student must complete an eDrop request through One.IU. After submitting the request, students must monitor their IU email account for additional instructions about the Late Withdrawal process.

Students should initiate the process immediately upon the onset of the extenuating circumstances.

If a Late Withdrawal is approved, the grade of W will be recorded on the transcript for the course(s).

Failure to complete a course without authorized withdrawal will result in a grade of F. The grade of W may not be recorded for a course when a student has taken the final exam or completed the final paper or project for the course.
