Minor in Italian

Students on Summer 2018, Fall 2018, or Spring 2019 requirements ITALMIN
An Italian minor establishes a student's competence in the language, which is important for jobs in many fields in our global economy. The minor also prepares students for travel in Italy and is a useful supplement to majors where original sources are in Italian (fine arts, history, philosophy, journalism, etc.). In addition to language skills, students who minor in Italian gain the soft skills of reasoning, communication, and multicultural understanding that are so important in today's job market.

Requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Intermediate Italian. One of the following options:
    • Two-course option:
      • FRIT-M 200 Intermediate Italian I
      • FRIT-M 250 Intermediate Italian II
    • Accelerated option:
      • FRIT-M 215 Accelerated Second-Year Italian
  2. Electives.
    1. 300-level Electives. Two (2) courses:
      • FRIT-M 300 Italian Conversation and Diction
      • FRIT-M 301 Italian Reading and Expression
      • FRIT-M 305 Perspectives on Italian Culture
      • FRIT-M 306 Italian Short Fiction
      • FRIT-M 307 Masterpieces of Italian Literature I
      • FRIT-M 308 Masterpieces of Italian Literature II
      • FRIT-M 322 Visions of Italy through the Arts, Media, Society, and Culture
      • FRIT-M 390 Studies in Italian Film
    2. 400-level Elective. One (1) course:

      • FRIT-M 435 Theatre Workshop
      • FRIT-M 450 Seminar in Italian Literature

    3. Additional Electives. Additional electives, as needed to fulfill remaining requirements, selected from the course lists above.
  3. Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    5. Exceptions to minor requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
