Requirements
- At least 42 credit hour must be completed in American Studies, including the following:
- Courses. Both of the following courses:
- AMST-A 451 Honors Senior Seminar in American Studies
- AMST-A 452 Honors Thesis in American Studies

- Description
- Introduction to various approaches in American studies scholarship, illustrated by the work of professors in the program, in preparation and training for the writing of an honors thesis.
AMST-A 452 Honors Thesis in American Studies

- Description
- Students develop and write an honors thesis under the direction of an American studies faculty member. An oral examination of the thesis is conducted by three faculty members.
- Foreign Language Competency. Students also must demonstrate advanced language competency in a single foreign language equivalent to a third year of study. This may require students to take an additional two semesters (6 cr.) of a foreign language beyond the standard College requirements, including at least one course at the 300 level or above that studies a foreign language literature. The language chosen for study must pertain directly to American Studies and requires the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of American Studies.
- GPA. Both of the following:
- College GPA of 3.300 or higher
- Major GPA of 3.500 or higher
- Courses. Both of the following courses:
- GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
- Students must have a College GPA of 3.300 or higher to qualify for admission to a Departmental Honors program and to receive Departmental Honors. Units may set a higher College GPA.
- Units establish additional criteria, including admissions procedures, academic performance standards, and whether there are required courses, papers, or projects.
- Students who wish to earn honors in two different units must complete a distinct body of work for each honors notation.
