Departmental Honors
Students on Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Spring 2020 requirements EAS-HON
Outstanding students who maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.300 are encouraged to participate in the honors program. Admission is gained through consultation with the departmental honors advisor, usually no later than the beginning of the junior year. An honors student may take special reading courses and enroll in honors sections of regular undergraduate courses.
Requirements
To complete the program and graduate with honors, the student must undertake a research project that leads to a thesis no later than the end of the senior year. If the research is taken for 3 credit hours (EAS-E 499), a formal written report may be substituted for one EAS course at the 400–499 level to fulfill the allied mathematics and science requirement. The research is guided by a faculty member, and the student is examined orally by a committee consisting of three faculty members. Research facilities are available on the Bloomington campus and at the Geologic Field Station in Montana.
College of Arts and Sciences Requirements
- Students must have a College GPA of 3.300 or higher to qualify for admission to a Departmental Honors program and to receive Departmental Honors. Units may set a higher College GPA.
- Units establish additional criteria, including admissions procedures, academic performance standards, and whether there are required courses, papers, or projects.
- Students who wish to earn honors in two different units must complete a distinct body of work for each honors notation.
