4+1 College Pathway to the Master of Arts in Modern German Culture

Students must satisfy all requirements for the B.A. in Germanic Studies. While graduate courses are typically taken before completion of the B.A. degree, they cannot be applied to both the graduate and undergraduate degree. The courses will apply to the graduate degree once the B.A. degree has been conferred. Students must also satisfy all the University Graduate School requirements for the Master of Arts in Modern German Culture.

Interested students should speak with the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Students are admitted on a rolling basis during their regular undergraduate studies.

Students may begin taking graduate courses as soon as they have achieved appropriate proficiency, usually in their junior and senior years. Graduate courses do not count toward their major or their undergraduate general education and residency requirements. Once undergraduate requirements are met and the B.A. degree conferred, the undistributed graduate courses are applied toward the M.A. degree. Students thus get a head start on graduate coursework during their undergraduate years, allowing undergraduate tuition rates and any undergraduate funding to apply. The final, post-B.A. year of graduate coursework is pursued with matriculated M.A. student status.
