Minor in Creative Technologies in Art + Design (Minors)

The Minor in Creative Technologies in Art and Design teaches students the process of idea development in art and design through the use of digital technologies and electronic visualization. The minor introduces a wide range of new media art and design practices and digital platforms in which to explore materializing digital designs through various computer-aided design and computation design software, computer-aided machining and rapid prototyping. In addition to the production of physical objects, these processes can lead to the development of digital drawings and paintings, video art, virtual reality and immersive installations created through digital projection, 3D display systems, interactive artwork, and artwork created by coding.

Requirements

The minor requires at least 18 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Introductory Course. One (1) course:
    • SOAD-S 210 Digital Art: Survey and Practice
  2. Fundamentals. One (1) course:
    • SOAD-A 101 Creative Core: Color
    • SOAD-A 103 Creative Core: 3D Design
    • SOAD-N 110 Introduction to Studio Art for Non-Majors
  3. Advanced Courses. Three (3) courses:
    • SOAD-S 310 Interactive Multimedia
    • SOAD-S 311 Video Art
    • SOAD-S 313 3D Computer Graphics
    • SOAD-S 390 Intermediate Photography
    • SOAD-S 410 Advanced Multimedia
    • SOAD-S 411 Digital Video
    • SOAD-S 413 Computer Graphical Environments
    • SOAD-S 490 Advanced Photography
  4. Elective. One (1) course:
    • Additional course from the Advanced Courses list
    • SOAD-D 201 3D Modeling for Design and Digital Fabrication
    • SOAD-D 264 Digital Architectural Drawing
    • SOAD-S 290 Fundamentals of Photography
  5. Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Minor GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    2. Minor Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    3. Minor Upper Division Credit Hours. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    4. Minor Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.

Minor Area Courses

Unless otherwise noted below, the following courses are considered in the academic program and will count toward academic program requirements as appropriate:

  • Any course contained on the course lists for the academic program requirements at the time the course is taken—as well as any other courses that are deemed functionally equivalent—except for those listed only under Addenda Requirements
  • Any course directed to a non-Addenda requirement through an approved exception

This program of study cannot be combined with the following:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art (FINASBA1)
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art (FINASBFA1)
  • Minor in Illustration (ILLUSTRMIN)
  • Minor in Studio Art (FINASMIN)

Exceptions to and substitutions for minor requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
