Minor in Nordic Studies

Students on Summer 2021, Fall 2021, or Spring 2022 requirements NORDSTMIN

The Minor in Nordic Studies provides students with profound understanding of the historical, cultural, and social context of Nordic countries and cultures, with special focus on Norway, Finland and Estonia. With the added language component, students can specialize in a language (Norwegian, Estonian or Finnish) and develop a communicative competence in these languages.

Requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Introductory Course or Language Study. One (1) of the following options:
    • Introductory Course Option. One (1) course:
      • CEUS-R 199 Introductory Topics in Central Eurasian Studies (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
      • CEUS-R 294 Introduction to Hungary, Estonia, and Finland
      • CEUS-R 299 Intermediate Topics in Central Eurasian Studies (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
      • GER-E 162 Scandinavian Culture
    • Language Study Option. One (1) course:
      • CEUS-T 203 Intermediate Estonian I
      • CEUS-T 204 Intermediate Estonian II
      • CEUS-T 303 Advanced Estonian I
      • CEUS-T 304 Advanced Estonian II
      • CEUS-T 493 Advanced Study of a Central Eurasian Language I
      • CEUS-T 494 Advanced Study of a Central Eurasian Language II
      • CEUS-T 201 Intermediate Finnish I
      • CEUS-T 202 Intermediate Finnish II
      • CEUS-T 301 Advanced Finnish I
      • CEUS-T 302 Advanced Finnish II
      • GER-K 200 Intermediate Norwegian I

  2. Electives. Four (4) courses:
    • Up to one (1) additional course from the Language Study Option list above

  3. Additional Requirements.
    1. At least six (6) credit hours in the minor must come from CEUS-prefixed courses
    2. At least six (6) credit hours in the minor must come from GER-prefixed courses
  4. Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Minor GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    2. Minor Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    3. Minor Upper Division Credit Hours. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    4. Minor Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.

Minor Area Courses

Unless otherwise noted below, the following courses are considered in the academic program and will count toward academic program requirements as appropriate:

  • Any course contained on the course lists for the academic program requirements at the time the course is taken—as well as any other courses that are deemed functionally equivalent—except for those listed only under Addenda Requirements
  • Any course directed to a non-Addenda requirement through an approved exception

Exceptions to and substitutions for minor requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
