Requirements
- Independent Research. Three (3) credit hours:
- BIOT-X 498 Independent Research in Biotechnology
- BIOT-X 499 Biotechnology Research Capstone
BIOT-X 498 Independent Research in Biotechnology
- Credits
- 1–3 credit hours
- Prerequisites
- Written consent of supervising instructor; and minimum 2.500 GPA
- Description
- Directed research opportunities for undergraduates in faculty research laboratories. Provides experience with state-of-the-art methodologies, instrumentation and approaches in biotechnology.
- Repeatability
- May be repeated for a maximum of 12 credit hours in BIOT-T 490 and BIOT-X 498.
BIOT-X 499 Biotechnology Research Capstone
- Credits
- 1–3 credit hours
- Prerequisites
- Biotechnology major; junior or senior standing; at least one credit of BIOT-T 490 or BIOT-X 498; minimum GPA or 3.000; and consent of instructor
- Description
- Student designs and performs an independent research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor. Requires a final written report on the research. If two semesters of BIOT-X 499 are completed and other departmental honors requirements are met, the written report may be used as an Honors thesis.
- Repeatability
- May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours.
- Capstone. Three (3) additional credit hours:

- Thesis. Successfully complete and defend a senior thesis based on original research.
- GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
- Students must have a College GPA of 3.300 or higher to qualify for admission to a Departmental Honors program and to receive Departmental Honors. Units may set a higher College GPA.
- Units establish additional criteria, including admissions procedures, academic performance standards, and whether there are required courses, papers, or projects.
- Students who wish to earn honors in two different units must complete a distinct body of work for each honors notation.
Exceptions to and substitutions for honors requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
