The Certificate in Folklore and Ethnomusicology is designed for undergraduates interested in folk art, folklore, folklife, and ethnomusicology within their own areas of specialization, who are seeking additional training in preparation for graduate studies in the Arts & Humanities or work in both the public and private sector. This certificate allows students to appreciate and explore social diversity and inclusion as realized in the flow of social life and interpersonal communication; to address issues of social cohesion and social conflict as these are manifested in artistic performances deriving from tradition; to assess the scope of individual artistic expression in relation to community standards and expectations; and to document the formation of social constructions such as gender, ethnic and national character, and heritage.

Requirements

The certificate requires at least 21 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Introductory or Survey Course. One (1) course:
    • FOLK-E 151 Global Pop Music
    • FOLK-F 101 Introduction to Folklore
    • FOLK-F 111 World Music and Culture
    • FOLK-F 121 World Arts and Cultures
    • FOLK-F 131 Folklore in the United States
    • FOLK-F 141 Urban Legend
  2. Advanced Topics in the Humanities or Social Sciences. Two (2) courses:
    • Any FOLK-E 200–299
    • Any FOLK-F 200–299
  3. Advanced Topics in Culture Area. Two (2) courses:
    • Any FOLK-E 300–399
    • Any FOLK-F 300–399 except FOLK-F 399
  4. Electives. One (1) additional course:
    • Any FOLK-[x] 100–499 except FOLK-F 399; FOLK-F 401; FOLK-F 499
  5. Methods and Theories. One (1) course:
    • FOLK-F 401
  6. Certificate GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Certificate GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the certificate—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    2. Certificate Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the certificate.
    3. Certificate Upper Division Credit Hours. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    4. Certificate Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.

Certificate Area Courses
  • Unless otherwise noted below, the following courses are considered in the academic program and will count toward academic program requirements as appropriate:

    • Any course at the 100–499 level with the FOLK subject area prefix—as well as any other subject areas that are deemed functionally equivalent
    • Any course contained on the course lists for the academic program requirements at the time the course is taken—as well as any other courses that are deemed functionally equivalent—except for those listed only under Addenda Requirements
    • Any course directed to a non-Addenda requirement through an approved exception
Exclusions

The following courses cannot be applied toward certificate requirements:

Exceptions to and substitutions for certificate requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
