Departmental Honors

Students on Summer 2022, Fall 2022, or Spring 2023 requirements MELC-HON

Requirements

  1. Research Track.
    1. Readings for Honors. Three (3) credit hours:
      • MELC-X 399 Readings for Honors
    2. Honors Thesis Course. Three (3) credit hours:
      • MELC-X 499 Honors Thesis
    3. Honors Thesis. Complete an approved honors thesis project based on independent research of primary sources in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish.
  2. Arabic Language Honors Track.
    1. Language Courses. Complete all requirements for the following courses with a grade of A- or higher:
      • MELC-A 400 Advanced Arabic III
      • MELC-A 450 Advanced Arabic IV
    2. Reading for Honors. Enroll in one (1) credit hour during the semesters NELC-A 400 and NELC-A 450 are taken and earn a grade of A- or higher:
      • MELC-X 399 Readings for Honors
    3. Honors Papers. Complete and present 7,000 word papers of high quality, written in Arabic, at the conclusion of NELC-A 400 and NELC-A 450 (Two (2) papers for a total of 14,000 words).
  3. GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Students must have a College GPA of 3.300 or higher to qualify for admission to a Departmental Honors program and to receive Departmental Honors. Units may set a higher College GPA.
    2. Units establish additional criteria, including admissions procedures, academic performance standards, and whether there are required courses, papers, or projects.
    3. Students who wish to earn honors in two different units must complete a distinct body of work for each honors notation.

Exceptions to and substitutions for honors requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
