Minor in Asian American Studies

Requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Introductory Course. One (1) course:
    • AAST-A 101 Introduction to Asian American Studies
    • SOC-S 101 Social Problems and Policies (Approved topics: "SOCIOLOGY OF ASIAN AMERICA" (TPC 15))
  2. Asian America and Asian Diaspora.
    1. Required Electives. Two (2) courses:
      • AAST-A 200 Asian American Literature
      • AAST-A 300 Topics in Asian American Studies
      • AAST-A 320 Advanced Topics in Asian American Literature
      • AAST-A 499 Capstone Seminar in Asian American Studies
      • AAST-X 490 Independent Readings and Research in Asian American Studies (Maximum of 3 credit hours, with approval of the Director, can count toward the minor)
      • AMST-A 298 Special Topics in Arts and Humanities for American Studies (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
      • AMST-A 299 Special Topics in Social and Historical Studies for American Studies (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
      • EALC-E 385 Asian Americans: Cultural Conflict and Identity
      • ENG-L 374 (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
      • HIST-A 205 Asian American History
      • POLS-Y 200 Contemporary Political Topics (Approved topics: "ASIAN-AMER POLITICS SINCE 60'S" (TPC 376))
      • SOC-S 342 Asian American Communities and Identities
      • EDUC-G 204 ASIAN AMERICAN MENTAL HEALTH
    2. Free Electives. Two (2) courses:
      • Additional course from the Required Electives list
      • AAST-A 201 Asian Diaspora Experience
      • AAST-A 499 Capstone Seminar in Asian American Studies
      • AMST-A 398 Advanced Topics in Arts and Humanities for American Studies (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
      • CMLT-C 360 Diasporic Literatures (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
  3. Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Minor GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    2. Minor Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    3. Minor Upper Division Credit Hours. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    4. Minor Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.

Minor Area Courses
  • Unless otherwise noted below, the following courses are considered in the academic program and will count toward academic program requirements as appropriate:

    • Any course at the 100–499 level with the AAST subject area prefix—as well as any other subject areas that are deemed functionally equivalent
    • Any course contained on the course lists for the academic program requirements at the time the course is taken—as well as any other courses that are deemed functionally equivalent—except for those listed only under Addenda Requirements
    • Any course directed to a non-Addenda requirement through an approved exception

Exceptions to and substitutions for minor requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
