Minor in Anthropology

Students on Summer 2024, Fall 2024, or Spring 2025 requirements ANTHMIN

The Minor in Anthropology offers students the opportunity to enhance their undergraduate studies with a wide range of course options and thematic specializations including human health and evolution, food and nutrition, human adaptation to the environment, communication and performance, indigenous cultures, and human rights.

Requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Anthropology Core. One (1) course:
    • ANTH-B 200 Bioanthropology
    • ANTH-E 200 Social and Cultural Anthropology
    • ANTH-L 200 Language and Culture
    • ANTH-P 200 Introduction to Archaeology
  2. Anthropology Elective. One (1) course:
    • Any ANTH-A 100–499
    • Any ANTH-B 100–499
    • Any ANTH-E 100–499
    • Any ANTH-L 100–499
    • Any ANTH-P 100–499
  3. Advanced Electives. At least three (3) courses and nine (9) credit hours:
    • Any ANTH-A 300–399
    • Any ANTH-A 400–499
    • Any ANTH-B 300–399
    • Any ANTH-B 400–499
    • Any ANTH-E 300–399
    • Any ANTH-E 400–499
    • Any ANTH-L 300–399
    • Any ANTH-L 400–499
    • Any ANTH-P 300–399 except ANTH-P 310; ANTH-P 314; ANTH-P 341
    • Any ANTH-P 400–499
    • Up to 3 total credit hours of the following:
      • ANTH-X 476 Museum Practicum
      • ANTH-X 477 Fieldwork in Anthropology
      • ANTH-X 478 Practicum in Anthropology
      • ANTH-X 479 Fieldwork in Bioanthropology
      • ANTH-X 480 Fieldwork in Archaeology
      • ANTH-X 490 Individual Readings in Anthropology
  4. Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Minor GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    2. Minor Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    3. Minor Upper Division Credit Hours. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    4. Minor Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
