Departmental Honors

Students on Summer 2018, Fall 2018, or Spring 2019 requirements MATH-HON

Requirements

The program for mathematics majors normally begins with MATH-S 211 or MATH-S 212. Those who wish to graduate with honors in mathematics are expected to complete courses MATH-S 303, MATH-S 311, MATH-S 312, MATH-S 403, MATH-S 413, MATH-S 414, and at least two 6 credit hour "S" or "M" sequences at the 400–499 level. (MATH-S 403, MATH-S 404 may be used to fulfill this requirement.) Students in this program must achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.300 in all of their courses and at least a grade point average of 3.500 in their mathematics courses. Students who successfully complete most of the courses above may petition the department to qualify for departmental honors. Qualified non-honors students may petition the department to take honors mathematics courses beginning with MATH-S 303 or MATH-S 311.

College of Arts and Sciences Requirements

  • Students must have a College GPA of 3.300 or higher to qualify for admission to a Departmental Honors program and to receive Departmental Honors. Units may set a higher College GPA.
  • Units establish additional criteria, including admissions procedures, academic performance standards, and whether there are required courses, papers, or projects.
  • Students who wish to earn honors in two different units must complete a distinct body of work for each honors notation.
