Departmental Honors--Interdepartmental B.A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies (Departmental Honors Programs)

Requirements

Students with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.300 and a minimum grade point average of 3.500 in Philosophy are eligible for the interdepartmental honors program in philosophy and religious studies, which culminates with one final honors thesis that combines notions from both disciplines. The honors program has the additional requirement that one of the following pairs of courses be completed:

• PHIL-P 498 Honors Thesis Directed Research and PHIL-P 499 Honors Thesis (Philosophy); or
• REL-R 399 Reading for Honors and REL-R 499 Senior Honors Essay, or an appropriate equivalent (Religious Studies)

The choice of the pair depends on whether the student works with a Philosophy or Religious Studies faculty member. The thesis will be judged by an honors committee that consists of members from both departments. The thesis must receive a grade of B+ or higher in order for the student to qualify for honors.

College of Arts and Sciences Requirements

• Students must have a College GPA of 3.300 or higher to qualify for admission to a Departmental Honors program and to receive Departmental Honors. Units may set a higher College GPA.
• Units establish additional criteria, including admissions procedures, academic performance standards, and whether there are required courses, papers, or projects.
• Students who wish to earn honors in two different units must complete a distinct body of work for each honors notation.
