Minor in Global Media (Minors)

The Minor in Global Media considers media in a global context. Media production, circulation and impacts do not respect regional or national boundaries. Understanding how messages and concepts travel, shape opinion and impact the flow of intellectual capital and social concepts is essential. This program of study provides a set of perspectives and critical tools that allow students pursuing a wide variety of careers to address these issues as they impact their work. The lists of upper-level courses represent a variety of approaches and skills and incorporate the potential for international fieldwork. The role of media as a means of cultural expression and entertainment are represented by the film courses, while a number of courses on the practice of journalism look at this aspect of media as a social institution.
Requirements
The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.

MSCH-C 214 Race, Prejudice, and the Media

- This course addresses the psychology of racial prejudice and stereotyping and uses this social-scientific framework to examine the impact of media portrayals. We will focus on how race influences our media consumption decisions and how exposure to certain media messages (in entertainment, news, music, video games) could change racial stereotypes.

MSCH-C 247 Screen Cultures

- Description
- Draws on theories of screen-based spectatorship and the spatial, material, and performative aspects of screens to present a historically-grounded comparative analysis of the relationship between screen technologies and cultural screen practices. Focuses on public and urban screens, mobile screens, touch screens, and interactive screen-based installations.

- Critically examines media technologies and their design, production, consumption and regulation. Explores historical and contemporary media technologies to make sense of their impact on politics, power, and meaning.

- Interrogates digital and analog game play as a rich cultural practice and as a means of identity formation, performance, and representation as well as the role game design plays in structuring social and political relations.

- Examines filmmaking in the black diaspora as a formally innovative visual and narrative art form in world cinema. Studies select films for their political and cultural significance and shared themes. Topics include colonialism and postcoloniality; race, gender and sexuality; migration and exile; modernity; and the dislocating processes of globalization.

- Explores important elements of human history through the prism of video games. Examines historical events as they have been portrayed through the medium of games as well as how aspects of history can be overemphasized or obscured by game portrayals. Covers historical events from a variety of time periods.

INTL-I 305 Advanced Topics in Culture and Politics

- Description
- Advanced topics in the study of culture and governance. The focus is on relationships of power and authority, including how governments, markets, and international organizations deploy or use culture, and how people turn to cultural resources to resist attempts to govern them and/or to assert their own political aims.
- Repeatability
- May be repeated with a different topic for a maximum of 12 credit hours.
- Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
- Minor GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
- Minor Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
- Minor Upper Division Credit Hours. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
- Minor Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
Minor Area Courses
Unless otherwise noted below, the following courses are considered in the academic program and will count toward academic program requirements as appropriate:
- Any course at the 100–499 level with the
MSCHsubject area prefix—as well as any other subject areas that are deemed functionally equivalent - Any course contained on the course lists for the academic program requirements at the time the course is taken—as well as any other courses that are deemed functionally equivalent—except for those listed only under Addenda Requirements
- Any course directed to a non-Addenda requirement through an approved exception

Exceptions to and substitutions for minor requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
