Certificate in Advanced Chinese Language and Culture

The Certificate in Advanced Chinese Language and Culture allows undergraduates to attain language proficiency in a critical language, Mandarin Chinese, while demonstrating cultural competency and regional expertise through a study abroad experience. The collaboration with the Chinese Language Flagship program allows students to take advantage of professional development activities, such as individual tutoring in Chinese, extracurricular activities, learning about a variety of career opportunities through guest speakers and collaboration with SGIS career coaches, and participation in the Capstone year internship.
Requirements
The certificate requires at least 38 credit hours* (most students will need to take at least 44 credit hours in the certificate), including the requirements listed below.
- Chinese Language.

May be offered independently in Chinese, or linked with an English-language content course.

- A broad survey of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean civilizations that examines the idea of East Asia as a region with unifying social, cultural, and political characteristics, and its different societies, introducing analytic frameworks that have guided recent understandings of East Asia as a region and of individual East Asian societies.

- Description
- Practice in reading, writing, and speaking through analysis of modern prose and literary texts. Examination of how Chinese speakers frame discourse, so students may develop their ability to present ideas with precise diction, in appropriate registers, in extended discourse.
EALC-C 496 Flagship Overseas Study in China

- Description
- Advanced language and culture study in an approved Language Flagship program in China. Arrangements for credit made in advance in consultation with the Chinese Flagship director and the director of undergraduate studies.

- At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
- At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed at the 300–499 level.
- Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the certificate.
- A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the certificate—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
- Exceptions to certificate requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
