Description

The Minor in Archaeology offers students the opportunity to enhance their undergraduate studies with coursework on material culture and how humanity's past informs our present and future. Options for the minor include courses on early human evolution and tool use, ancient civilizations, cultural resource management, museum studies, and archaeological methods.

Minor requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.

  1. Introductory course. One (1) course:
  2. Archaeological Methods. One (1) course:
    • (Recommended course)
    • (Recommended course)
  3. Archaeology of a Geographic Region. One (1) course:
  4. Archaeology Electives. Two (2) additional courses from the Advanced Archaeology list, at least one (1) of which must be at the 300–499 level.
    • Up to 5 total credit hours of the following:
    • One of the following:
      • (with approval of department)
      • (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
      • (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
      • (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
  5. GPA and Hours Requirements.
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    5. Exceptions to minor requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
