The Minor in Folklore and Ethnomusicology provides students with a nuanced understanding of expressive culture's role in everyday life. Students will be able to apply a diverse yet comprehensive knowledge of oral narrative, verbal art, music, and material culture to understand the worldviews and diverse experiences of people in the United States and from around the globe.

Minor requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.

  1. Methods and Theories. One (1) course:
  2. Electives.
    • 300–399 Level Electives. One (1) course:
    • 300–499 Level Electives. One (1) additional course:
    • Free Electives. Two (2) additional courses:
  3. GPA and Hours Requirements.
    1. Minor Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. Minor Upper Division Courses. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    4. Minor GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
