Certificate in Global French

Students on Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Spring 2020 requirements GLBFRNACRT
The Certificate in Global French allows students to develop professional and interdisciplinary skills focused on French and Francophone culture in the world. They achieve language proficiency beyond the French minor by taking at least one 400–499 level French course, and they benefit from a wide range of course choices, within and outside of the Department of French and Italian, in order to coherently integrate their French studies with their other program(s) of study.

Requirements

The certificate requires at least 24 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. French language. Six (6) credit hours of courses to solidify French skills in writing, speaking, listening and reading.
    1. Fourth-Semester French. Three (3) credit hours:
      • FRIT-F 250 Second-Year French II: Language and Culture
      • FRIT-F 265 Accelerated Second-Year French (maximum of 3 credit hours can apply toward the requirement)
    2. Language and Linguistics. Three (3) credit hours:
      • FRIT-F 313 Advanced Grammar
      • FRIT-F 314 Creative and Critical Writing in French
      • FRIT-F 315 The Sounds and Rhythms of French
      • FRIT-F 316 Conversational Practice
      • FRIT-F 401 Structure and Development of French

  2. Intercultural Understanding. Nine (9) credit hours of courses that promote an understanding of French/Francophone culture and encourage reflection on how it is like or unlike the student's own culture.
    1. Culture through Literary Expression. Six (6) credit hours:
      1. Introductory Course in French/Francophone Studies. Must be completed on the Bloomington campus, from the Introductory Course in French/Francophone Studies list.

  5. Additional Requirements.
    1. At least 18 credit hours of the above must be in FRIT-F courses taught in French.
    2. At least three (3) credit hours of the above must be in a FRIT-F course at the 400–499 level taken on the Bloomington campus.
  6. Certificate GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the certificate.
    4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the certificate—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    5. Exceptions to certificate requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
