Description

The Certificate in Global French allows students to develop professional and interdisciplinary skills focused on French and Francophone culture in the world. They achieve language proficiency beyond the French minor by taking at least one 400–499 level French course, and they benefit from a wide range of course choices, within and outside of the Department of French and Italian, in order to coherently integrate their French studies with their other program(s) of study.

Certificate requirements

The certificate requires at least 24 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.

  1. French language.
    1. Fourth-Semester French. Three (3) credit hours:

    1. Culture through Literary Expression.
      1. Introductory Course in French/Francophone Studies. Must be completed on the Bloomington campus. One (1) course:

  3. France and French in the World.
    1. Courses Inside the Department of French and Italian. Three (3) credit hours:
      • Additional course approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies
    2. Courses Outside the Department of French and Italian. Three (3) credit hours:

  5. 400–499 Level Residency. One (1) course to be taken on the Indiana University Bloomington campus (may be fulfilled by a course taken for a requirement above):
  6. Courses Taught in French. At least 18 credit hours for the certificate must be completed in courses taught in French.
  7. GPA and Hours Requirements.
    1. Certificate Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. Certificate Upper Division Courses. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the certificate.
    4. Certificate GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the certificate—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
