Description

The Minor in Speech and Hearing Sciences is designed for students interested in gaining knowledge about topics related to human communication, including hearing, language, and speech in children and adults. Completion of the minor can be used to fulfill prerequisites for graduate studies in audiology, deaf education, and speech-language pathology, and provides preparation for students to work in careers such as psychology, education, medicine, and other health related professions.

Minor requirements

The minor requires at least 16 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.

  1. Gateway. One (1) course:
    • Both of the following:
  2. Core.
    1. Speech Anatomy and Physiology. One (1) course:
    2. 300-Level Courses. Two (2) courses:
  3. Topical Seminar. One (1) course:
  4. GPA and Hours Requirements.
    1. Minor Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. Minor Upper Division Courses. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    4. Minor GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
