Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures
The Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (MELC) offers a major leading to the B.A. degree with tracks in Arabic, ancient Egyptian, Hebrew, and Persian, as well as minors in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Islamic Studies, and Middle Eastern Civilization. Courses are also available to students in other disciplines who wish to acquire a working knowledge of a Middle Eastern language or satisfy a foreign language requirement. Courses in Middle Eastern literatures and cultures, many of which are open to students with no knowledge of these languages, may be used in conjunction with other disciplines such as linguistics, English, comparative literature, and folklore to satisfy Breadth of Inquiry requirements. All courses can also be taken as electives.
