Extended-X
Policy statement
Indiana University allows students to retake up to three IU courses or a total of 10 credit hours, whichever comes first, and have the grades earned in an earlier enrollment of the same courses (and topics, where applicable) marked with—or, for classes taken Fall 2021 and later, replaced with—an "X," with some significant restrictions. The "X'd" grades are no longer factored into the student's GPA on the transcript. Students wishing to pursue this option should read the full text of the policy.
College of Arts and Sciences students should contact their academic advisor(s) to discuss the use of this policy and its implications.
The Extended-X form can be found at https://curriculum.college.indiana.edu/forms/f/ex (College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate students only).
Students actively pursuing undergraduate degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences as of Fall 2021 will benefit from this policy regardless of when they matriculated to the Bloomington campus. The College GPA and all GPAs derived from it (major, concentration, minor, etc.) will exclude "X'd" grades. See Grade Point Averages (GPAs) policy for more information on how GPAs in the College are calculated.
"X'd" grades do not carry credit toward degree and cannot be used to fulfill requirements.
Students must file all Extended-X petitions by 5 p.m. (Eastern Time) of the last Friday of the academic term in which they seek to graduate. This date is according to the full-term end date of the official calendar for the Indiana University Bloomington campus.
- 2024-05-01: Clarified the date by which Extended-X petitions must be filed by the student.
- 2022-05-01: Updated links.
- 2021-09-24: Policy edited for clarity and to reflect that the College honors the Extended-X policy as of Fall 2021.
- 2018-05-01: Policy edited for clarity and style.
