Grade Replacement

Policy statement

Indiana University allows students to retake up to three IU courses or a total of 10 credit hours, whichever comes first, and have the grades earned in an earlier enrollment of the same courses (and topics, where applicable) marked with—or, for classes taken Fall 2021 and later, replaced with—an "X," with some significant restrictions. The "X'd" grades are no longer factored into the student's GPA on the transcript. Students wishing to pursue this option should read the full text of the policy.

College of Arts and Sciences students should contact their academic advisor(s) to discuss the use of this policy and its implications.

The Grade Replacement form can be found at https://curriculum.college.indiana.edu/forms/f/ex (College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate students only).

Students actively pursuing undergraduate degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences as of Fall 2021 will benefit from this policy regardless of when they matriculated to the Bloomington campus. The College GPA and all GPAs derived from it (major, concentration, minor, etc.) will exclude "X'd" grades. See Grade Point Averages (GPAs) policy for more information on how GPAs in the College are calculated.

"X'd" grades do not carry credit toward degree and cannot be used to fulfill requirements.

To affect academic standing for the current term, the Grade Replacement form must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. the Friday of final exam week; otherwise, it must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. the business day following the IUB Final Grades Entry Deadline (full term) of the academic term for which the student has applied for graduation. Specific dates can be found on the Deadlines, Milestones and Term-based Criteria page.
