Concentration in Creative Writing (Bachelor of Arts in English)

The Concentration in Creative Writing allows students to engage with a community of learning through courses focused on the activity of creative writing. The concentration represents a full spectrum of courses from beginning to advanced. Small classes and workshops ensure close collaboration between the faculty and the student. Workshops are taught by the graduate creative writing faculty, all published, award-winning writers.

Requirements

The concentration requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Introduction to Creative Writing. One (1) course:
    • ENG-W 203 Creative Writing
    • ENG-W 301 Writing Fiction
    • ENG-W 303 Writing Poetry
    • ENG-W 311 Writing Creative Nonfiction
    • ENG-W 401 Advanced Fiction Writing
    • ENG-W 403 Advanced Poetry Writing
    • ENG-W 413 Advanced Creative Nonfiction Writing
  2. Writing Technique. One (1) course:
    • ENG-W 381 The Craft of Fiction
    • ENG-W 383 The Craft of Poetry
  3. Advanced Course. One (1) course:
    • ENG-W 401 Advanced Fiction Writing
    • ENG-W 403 Advanced Poetry Writing
    • ENG-W 413 Advanced Creative Nonfiction Writing
  4. Creative Writing Elective. One (1) course:
    • Additional course from the Writing Technique course list
    • Additional course from the Advanced Course list
    • ENG-W 301 Writing Fiction
    • ENG-W 303 Writing Poetry

  5. General English Elective. One (1) course:
    • Additional ENG course at the 200–499 level (excluding ENG-W 202, and ENG-W 205)
  6. Concentration GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the concentration must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    2. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the concentration.
    3. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the concentration—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    4. Exceptions to concentration requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
