Specialization in Sex, Gender and Media – Bachelor of Arts in Media

Students on Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Spring 2020 requirements MDAS32

Requirements

The specialization requires at least 9 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Sex, Gender and Media. Three (3) courses:
    • MSCH-F 375 Race, Gender, and Representation
    • MSCH-F 398 National and Transnational Cinemas (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
    • MSCH-F 420 Topics in Media History (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
    • MSCH-J 460 Advanced Journalism Topics (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
    • MSCH-S 310 Sex in the Media
    • MSCH-S 451 Topical Seminar in Media Psychology (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
    • One (1) from the following:
      • AAAD-A 430 The Cinema of Africana Women
      • GNDR-G 310 Representation and the Body
      • GNDR-G 325 Gender and Celebrity Studies
      • GNDR-G 330 Looking Like a Feminist: Visual Culture and Critical Theory
      • INTL-I 425 Gender: International Perspectives (approved topics only; see academic advisor)
      • SOC-S 422 Constructing Sexuality
  2. Specialization GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the specialization.
    2. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the specialization—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    3. Exceptions to specialization requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
