Minor in Italian

Students on Summer 2022, Fall 2022, or Spring 2023 requirements ITALMIN

Requirements

The minor requires at least 15 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Intermediate Italian. One of the following options:
    • Two-course option:
      • FRIT-M 200 Intermediate Italian I
      • FRIT-M 250 Intermediate Italian II
    • Accelerated option:
      • FRIT-M 215 Accelerated Second-Year Italian
  2. Electives.
    1. 300–399 Level Electives. Two (2) courses:
      • FRIT-M 300 Italian Conversation and Diction
      • FRIT-M 301 Italian Reading and Expression
      • FRIT-M 305 Perspectives on Italian Culture
      • FRIT-M 306 Italian Short Fiction
      • FRIT-M 307 Masterpieces of Italian Literature I
      • FRIT-M 308 Masterpieces of Italian Literature II
      • FRIT-M 322 Visions of Italy through the Arts, Media, Society, and Culture

      • Additional course(s) from the 400-499 Level Electives
  3. Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Minor GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    2. Minor Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    3. Minor Upper Division Credit Hours. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    4. Minor Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.

Minor Area Courses
  • Unless otherwise noted below, the following courses are considered in the academic program and will count toward academic program requirements as appropriate:

    • Any course at the 200–499 level with the FRIT-M subject area prefix—as well as any other subject areas that are deemed functionally equivalent
    • Any course contained on the course lists for the academic program requirements at the time the course is taken—as well as any other courses that are deemed functionally equivalent—except for those listed only under Addenda Requirements
    • Any course directed to a non-Addenda requirement through an approved exception
Exclusions

The following courses cannot be applied toward minor requirements:

  • FRIT-M 222 Topics in Italian Culture
  • FRIT-M 234
  • FRIT-M 235 Rome, the City and the Myth
  • FRIT-M 236 Dante's Divine Comedy
  • FRIT-M 237 Boccaccio's Social Decameron
  • FRIT-M 238 Visual, Musical, and Literary Culture in Italy
  • FRIT-M 311 Italian Film and Culture
  • FRIT-M 334 Power and Imagination in Italy
  • FRIT-M 391 Hollywood Italians
Restrictions

The following restrictions apply to the minimum credit hours required in the minor:

  • No more than one (1) credit hour of the following may count toward the minor:
    • FRIT-M 202 Conversational Practice with Advanced Italian Speakers
    • FRIT-M 203 Conversational Practice with Italians

This program of study cannot be combined with the following:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Italian (ITALBA)

Exceptions to and substitutions for minor requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
