- Independent Research. Six (6) credit hours:
- AAAD-X 490 Individual Readings in African American Studies

- To enroll, students must (1) secure the written consent of the instructor and the departmental chairperson, and (2) file an approved list of readings to be completed during the semester with the departmental secretary

- With prior approval, may be repeated for a maximum total of 6 credit hours in AAAD-X 490 and AAAD-A 495.
- Honors Project or Thesis. Three (3) credit hours:

- Description
- Development, completion, and defense of honors thesis.
- Repeatability
- May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours.
- College GPA. A College grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.300 is required.
Exceptions to and substitutions for honors requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
African American and African Diaspora Studies majors with a minimum 3.300 cumulative grade point average and a minimum 3.300 grade point average within the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies are eligible for the departmental honors program.
A copy of the student's transcript and a short letter of application describing the honors project in general terms is required for admission. Students should apply in the fall semester of their junior year.
