Minor in Interior Design Studies (Minors)

The minor provides students with a broad, introductory exposure to topics foundational to interior design (including studio-based design problem-solving, design history, and design communications), as well as the opportunity either to study additional topics in an exploratory way, or to gain more focused experience with a specific topic area of their choice.

Requirements

The minor requires at least 18 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Introductory Courses.
    1. Beginning Studio. One (1) course:
      • SOAD-D 170 Interior Design Studio I
    2. Architectural Drawing. One (1) course:
      • SOAD-D 264 Digital Architectural Drawing
  2. Intermediate Studio. One (1) course:
    • SOAD-D 271 Interior Design Studio II
    • SOAD-D 272 Interior Design Studio III
  3. Interior Design History and Theory. One (1) course:
    • SOAD-D 365 Architectural, Interior, and Furniture Design Studies
  4. Advanced Electives. Two (2) courses:
    • SOAD-D 300 Design, Culture, Context, and Diversity
    • SOAD-D 321 Design History I
    • SOAD-D 322 Design History II
    • SOAD-D 323 Design History III
    • SOAD-D 360 Building Detailing and Systems
    • SOAD-D 366 Lighting Interior Spaces
    • SOAD-D 394 Advanced Digital Architectural Drawing
    • SOAD-D 485 Advanced Special Topics in Interior Design
    • SOAD-X 490 Independent Study in Interior Design
  5. Minor GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
    2. At least 9 credit hours in the minor must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    3. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the minor.
    4. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the minor—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    5. Exceptions to minor requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
