Departmental Honors

Students on Summer 2023, Fall 2023, or Spring 2024 requirements SLHS-HON

Students who participate in the Honors Program in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences seek to deepen their understanding of the field of communication sciences and its disorders by engaging in independent scholarly and scientific research. Those who graduate with Departmental Honors participate in a culminating academic experience by writing a thesis under the guidance of a faculty advisor.

Requirements

  1. Research Methods. One (1) course:
    • SLHS-S 311 Introduction to Research in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences
    • PSY-P 211 Methods of Experimental Psychology with departmental approval
  2. Honors Seminar. One (1) course:
    • SLHS-S 398 Honors Seminar in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences
  3. Reading and Research-Junior Year. One (1) course:
    • SLHS-S 399 Senior Honors I: Reading and Research
  4. Reading and Research-Senior Year. One (1) course:
    • SLHS-S 499 Senior Honors II: Reading and Research
  5. Research Project. Successfully complete a research project and present the results to the department.
  6. Major GPA. A Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences major grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.500 is required.
  7. College GPA. A College grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.300 is required.

Exceptions to and substitutions for honors requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
