Certificate in Dutch Studies

The Certificate in Dutch Studies provides opportunity for advanced study in the language, culture, art, politics, economics, and society of the Dutch-speaking world. It offers a distinctive path to careers abroad from the EU to South Arica and Indonesia and humanistic engagement with one of the great global cultures.

Requirements

The certificate requires at least 27 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
  1. Dutch Language Core. 15 credit hours:
    • GER-N 200 Dutch Reading, Composition, and Conversation I
    • GER-N 250 Dutch Reading, Composition, and Conversation II
    • GER-N 300 Advanced Dutch I
    • GER-N 330 Advanced Dutch II
    • GER-N 400 Topics in Dutch Culture and Literature
  2. Modern Dutch Culture. One (1) course:
    • GER-E 341 Dutch Culture: The Modern Netherlands
  3. The Golden Age of Dutch Culture. One (1) course:
    • GER-E 342 Topics in Dutch Culture and History
  4. Electives. Six (6) credit hours:
    • ARTH-A 333 From Van Eyck to Vermeer
    • ARTH-A 437 Playing with Pictures in the Fifteenth-Century Netherlands
    • GER-E 343 Topics in Dutch Literature
    • POLS-Y 335 Western European Politics
    • Additional courses approved by the director of undergraduate studies
  5. Certificate GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
    1. Certificate GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the certificate—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
    2. Certificate Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the certificate.
    3. Certificate Upper Division Credit Hours. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed at the 300–499 level.
    4. Certificate Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
