Certificate in Dutch Studies
Students on Summer 2022, Fall 2022, or Spring 2023 requirements DUTCHSACRT
The Certificate in Dutch Studies provides opportunity for advanced study in the language, culture, art, politics, economics, and society of the Dutch-speaking world. It offers a distinctive path to careers abroad from the EU to South Arica and Indonesia and humanistic engagement with one of the great global cultures.
Requirements
The certificate requires at least 27 credit hours, including the requirements listed below.
- Dutch Language Core. 15 credit hours:

- Description
- Development of oral fluency; attention to idiom. Further grammatical study; attention to formal writing style. Readings in Dutch literature and culture.
GER-N 250 Dutch Reading, Composition, and Conversation II

- Description
- Further development of style and idiom in speaking and writing. Reading of novels. Oral and written practice on topics of contemporary Dutch life.
GER-N 300 Advanced Dutch I

- Description
- Comprehensive review of grammatical points introduced in GER-N 100 through GER-N 250. Reading proficiency, different levels of style and expression, and written argumentation. Discussion through short literary texts and one novel. Conducted in Dutch.
GER-N 330 Advanced Dutch II

- Description
- Introduction to different levels of style and expression and to written argumentation in Dutch. Texts include various literary genres and form the basis for in-class discussion and for exercises designed to develop oral and written fluency. Conducted in Dutch.

- Certificate GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
- Certificate GPA. A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the certificate—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
- Certificate Minimum Grade. Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the certificate.
- Certificate Upper Division Credit Hours. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed at the 300–499 level.
- Certificate Residency. At least 9 credit hours in the certificate must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
Certificate Area Courses
Unless otherwise noted below, the following courses are considered in the academic program and will count toward academic program requirements as appropriate:
- Any course contained on the course lists for the academic program requirements at the time the course is taken—as well as any other courses that are deemed functionally equivalent—except for those listed only under Addenda Requirements
- Any course directed to a non-Addenda requirement through an approved exception
This program of study cannot be combined with the following:
- Minor in Dutch Studies (DUTCHMIN)
Exceptions to and substitutions for certificate requirements may be made with the approval of the unit's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
