FRIT-M 200 Intermediate Italian I

- Description
- Building on Elementary Italian I and II, students further study and practice fundamental concepts and structures in Italian grammar. Through a variety of assignments and activities, they strengthen proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing, cultural analysis and understanding. Includes an introduction to brief literary texts.

FRIT-M 215 Accelerated Second-Year Italian

- Description
- An accelerated treatment of material covered in both FRIT-M 200 and FRIT-M 250. Designed for students who have completed FRIT-M 115 and other highly motivated students, students with extensive experience with another language, and/or students who aspire to study abroad.

FRIT-M 250 Intermediate Italian II

- Description
- The study of more complex concepts and structures in Italian grammar. Through a variety of texts, media, and assignments, students practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and they analyze cultural topics and situations in greater depth. Increased attention to short literary texts.

FRIT-M 300 Italian Conversation and Diction

- Description
- Conducted in Italian, this course continues the study of advanced language through contemporary Italian cinema. While the course focuses on developing speaking abilities, it integrates other language skills and extensive analysis of contemporary Italian culture through a wide variety of topics, such as LGBTQ rights, immigration, religion, politics, and others.
FRIT-M 301 Italian Reading and Expression

- Description
- Conducted in Italian, this course introduces students to reading and writing strategies through analysis of different cultural materials (from journalistic writing to literature to YouTube videos and movies). The theme of the course changes every semester. It may focus on topics such as music, heroes and antiheroes, immigration, or minorities.

- Description
- Study of Italian culture and society through a variety of visual and textual materials. Develops advanced language skills in parallel with visual literacy skills through investigation of different representations of the conditions, questions, and ideals that have shaped Italy as a nation and as a global player over time.

- In-depth analysis of cinema as a major Italian art form and expression of Italian culture. Emphasis on specific directors (Fellini, Pasolini, Visconti, Wertmüller, Bertolucci, etc.) or themes (literature and film, neorealism, politics and ideology, film comedy, etc.). Conducted in Italian.

- Focuses on the development of advanced Italian proficiency in both oral and written modes. Includes instruction and practice in presentation delivery and essay writing on a variety of topics, working with models and exercises from texts of various genres. Taught in Italian.

FRIT-M 496 Foreign Study in Italian

- Description
- Course involves planning of research project during the year preceding period of study abroad. Time spent in research abroad must amount to at least one week for each credit hour granted. Research paper must be presented by end of semester following foreign study.

FRIT-M 499 Reading for Honors

FRIT-X 493 Individual Readings in Italian Literature

- Description
- Taught in Italian.

- May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours in FRIT-M 495 and FRIT-X 493.
- Seven (7) credit hours from the list above must be at the 400–499 level. One (1) of the 400–499 courses (3 credit hours) must be taken on the Bloomington campus, exclusive of FRIT-M 496 , FRIT-M 499, and FRIT-X 493.
- 25 credit hours:
- Electives. Five (5) additional credit hours offered through the Italian program (FRIT-M courses). The remaining credit hours may be earned by completing courses taught in English.
- Major GPA, Hours, and Minimum Grade Requirements.
- At least 18 credit hours in the major must be completed in courses taken through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
- At least 18 credit hours in the major must be completed at the 300–499 level.
- Except for the GPA requirement, a grade of C- or higher is required for a course to count toward a requirement in the major.
- A GPA of at least 2.000 for all courses taken in the major—including those where a grade lower than C- is earned—is required.
- Exceptions to major requirements may be made with the approval of the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies, subject to final approval by the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Bachelor of Arts degree requires at least 120 credit hours, to include the following:
- College of Arts and Sciences Credit Hours. At least 100 credit hours must come from College of Arts and Sciences disciplines.
- Upper Division Courses. At least 42 credit hours (of the 120) must be at the 300–499 level.
- College Residency. Following completion of the 60th credit hour toward degree, at least 36 credit hours of College of Arts and Sciences coursework must be completed through the Indiana University Bloomington campus or an IU-administered or IU co-sponsored Overseas Study program.
- College GPA. A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.000 is required for all courses taken at Indiana University.
- CASE Requirements. The following College of Arts and Sciences Education (CASE) requirements must be completed:

- CASE Culture Studies
- CASE Critical Approaches: 1 course
- CASE Foreign Language: Proficiency in a single foreign language through the second semester of the second year of college-level coursework

Most students must also successfully complete the Indiana University Bloomington General Education program.
